Job oportunities

Life in Australia is not as easy as most students expect. Despite the fact that you have a university degree or other tertiary qualification, or you are really good in your field, you also need little bit of luck to get the job that will suit your education and personal aspirations. The majority of students work in restaurants as a kitchen hands or dishwashers, in hotels as cleaners, in cafes as waiters or waitress, or in fast food shops as a sandwich hands etc. If you have enough of determination and courage you might be lucky enough to get an office job, but that is quite rare.

The employers require previous work experience with your every single job application so if you are information engineer and you applied for job as a dishwasher you will surely say that you are experienced dishwasher. The employer is more satisfied if you say so. Of course anybody can do those kinds of jobs.

The rates of pay for students are 10 to 14 AUD per hour. There are some exceptions of course but we are speaking of an average income. It means that for 20 hours of work a week you will earn 200 to 280 AUD.

The students from overseas usually live in various communities over here in Sydney and that makes getting jobs for you much easier. You get advice where to go and what to ask for. It works this way with getting accommodation, furniture, books, computers etc.

The most convenient time for coming to Sydney is in the summer in October or November. Hotels and restaurants need new staff; they are getting ready for Christmas and the busy season in general.

You have to take into consideration that you might not find a job within first months or two so you will need enough cash or credit card with you. You will more likely find the job within four weeks but it depends how active you are.
